fasting cleanse
Mom3Boys asked:

I am going in for my 3rd or 4th colonoscopy in two days, I would like to do a natural cleanse instead of the prescribed prep meds, so I have been fasting for 5 days now, will be 7 when I go in. I drink lemonade all day (glass water with 2T lemon juice and 1 T maple syrup and cayanne pepper) 6-10 through day, night laxative tea and upon rising in AM I take quart of water with sea salt to flush. Every day. I still saw some brown material this am but mostly the excrement is clear yellow, like urine.

Could this cleanse be good enough to skip the prescription cleanse and do you see any reason why it might be unsafe? Doc wants me to do the prep, on top of the fast, but I would rather avoid it. Have had no food this week. Thanks for your opinion.
Thank you so much for your answers, this really helps me. FYI this procedure is just a routine screening, no symptoms, just family history and I am fine with it not completing because I really want to know if I can do an alternative natural cleanse, risk reward is acceptable if I have to do this again. Also, I stopped the pepper, thanks all!
FYI I went in today to try to do the procedure or at least talk about this as a possible alternative, and my doc was very understanding but he says he did try on someone who had fasted twice as long as me (2 weeks) and it did not work. Furthermore, he felt doing a salt water flush is fine, once, but to do it daily for an extended period of time is hard on the kidneys. He says we don’t need to do regular cleanse of the bowel system. So I will go back next week after preparing properly and get the procedure done.

  1. Absolutely not. You really need the meds to do their job. The tea won’t move the physical material out in the way you need it done for the colonoscopy. If you don’t clean yourself out, they may have to abort the colonoscopy half way because there is nothing to see among all the solids. If that is the case, your insurance will not cover a second colonoscopy and the repeat will cost you out of pocket.

Furthermore, the cayanne pepper in the Master Cleanse really irritates the inside of your digestive tract, which can interfere with a good shot of what you have going on inside there. You want them to get a clear picture of your colon, not freak out that your colon is irritated.

I know that you want to avoid doing medication, but this is one of those cases where you do what the doctor tells you.

  2. WOW, why would you want to double cross your doctors? Maybe you would like to come back for a 5th time in a week, so do it right.

  3. The home use medication is nasty and i totally understand where you are coming from I did the fasting along with the medication ( i had the large gallon container with a 4 flavor packet thing) it was very thick water and it was the worst part of the entire colonoscopy. I only got 3/4 of it down the rest i was tossin back up. I allerted the medical facility and they were cool with it just talk to them about alternitives if any that can be done without risking the full view of the colon. Remember to listen to your doctor but QUESTION everything and get answers !!! if they cant provide answers that you can fully understand RUN! get another doctor that can ,,,,,, I had a great doctor that explained everything twice when needed and was greatful that i actually cared as to what they were doing and to understand it fully remember they need your INFORMED consent and if u dont understand the procedure they cannot get your “INFORMED” consent …
