Mom3Boys asked: I am going in for my 3rd or 4th colonoscopy in two days, I would like to do a natural cleanse instead of the prescribed prep meds, so I have been fasting for 5 days now, will be 7 when I go in. I drink lemonade all day (glass water with 2T lemon juice and 1 T maple syrup and cayanne pepper) 6-10 through day, night laxative tea and upon rising in AM I take quart of water with sea salt to flush. Every day. I still saw some brown material this am but mostly the excrement is clear yellow, like urine.
Could this cleanse be good enough to skip the prescription cleanse and do you see any reason why it might be unsafe? Doc wants me to do the prep, on top of the fast, but I would rather avoid it. Have had no food this week. Thanks for your opinion.
Thank you so much for your answers, this really helps me. FYI this procedure is just a routine screening, no symptoms, just family history and I am fine with it not completing because I really want to know if I can do an alternative natural cleanse, risk reward is acceptable if I have to do this again. Also, I stopped the pepper, thanks all!
FYI I went in today to try to do the procedure or at least talk about this as a possible alternative, and my doc was very understanding but he says he did try on someone who had fasted twice as long as me (2 weeks) and it did not work. Furthermore, he felt doing a salt water flush is fine, once, but to do it daily for an extended period of time is hard on the kidneys. He says we don’t need to do regular cleanse of the bowel system. So I will go back next week after preparing properly and get the procedure done.
